Cultural round island tour

Day 1  :
Collect at Colombo airport and transfer to the nearby beach resort of Negombo for rest and recuperation.

Day 2  :
After breakfast we drive to the renouned Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage to watch up to 100 rescued elephants bathing –  with the youngest being  given milk to drink!  We continue via Dambulla for lunch to Sigirya for a late afternoon visit to the Lion Rock World Heritage site with its 5th century garden city, fortress ruins and the famous damsel frescoes. Overnight in Sigirya.

Day 3  :
Drive through beautiful lake and jungle scenery to Polonnaruwa – a former island capital with splendid ruins of palaces, temples and dagobas. After lunch, we drive to Mahintale, where Buddhism was first established on the island. Continue to Anuradhapura for overnight.

Day 4  :
This former island capital dates back to the 3rd century BC and is especially revered for its ancient Bodhi treee – a scion of the Buddha’s enlightenment tree in India. Visit the ruins of impressive shrines, Temples and huge Dagobas before returning to Dambulla for lunch and tour of the remarkable 12th  century Rock Cave Temples. On the way to Kandy we visit a Spice Garden to learn about Ayurvedic herbs, plants and medicine. Overnight in Kandy.

Day 5  :
Kandy was the last independent state to fall to the British and is famed for is Temple of Buddha’s tooth. Set in hilly country around a beautiful lake,  the city hosts the annual and world famous Perahera elephant parades (August). The city tour includes the Tea Factory museum and the highly regarded Peradenya Botanical gardens. Time for shopping before the evening “Kandy Dance” cultural show. Overnight in Kandy.

Day 6  :
We drive though magnificent mountain scenery to Nuwara Eliya for lunch passing the island’s famed tea plantations.  Continue to the dramatically located village of Ella with fabulous views. Overnight in Ella.

Day 7  :
At leisure in Ella visting waterfalls and climbing Little Adam’s peak. Afternoon drive to the Tissamarama lake district near the Yala game reserve.

Day 8  :
Early morning safari by jeep to see the game in Yala Park. In the late afternoon (sunset puja time) visit to the holy city of  Kataragama equally revered by Buddhists, Hindus and Moslems.

Day 9  :
On our last day we drive past beautiful palm-fringed beaches to the World Heritage site of Galle for lunch and sightseeing in its well preserved Dutch  fort. Continue to Colombo with drop offs at beach hotels along the way for guests extending their stay. Overnight in Negombo.

Day 10:
Airport drop off. End of tour.
